The Hollywood Blacklist was a list of media workers. It was the result of a hearing conducted by the House of Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). In October of 1947, 41 screenwriters, producers, and directors were called to appear in court to investigate if they had Communist ties or not.

FIRST OF ALL:

WHAT IS THE HOLLYWOOD BLACKLIST?

The media workers were to respond to the HUAC's central question:  “Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?” People who confessed to be Communists were blacklisted, but also given the opportunity to name others like them, which strengthened their reputation with the HUAC and the film industry.
